John "Jack" Edward Robertson age 81, of Sturgis, MI passed away Tuesday June 13, 2017 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI.
He was born November 21, 1935 in Toledo, OH the son to the late Clifford and Ida (Heaser) Robertson. The family moved to Detroit, MI for a brief time before settling in Short Hills, NJ. After graduation from Milburn High School, Jack attended Michigan State University and graduated in May 1957 with a degree in packaging engineering.
While attending MSU, Jack met Cynthia Bowen and they were married on August 21, 1958. She passed away on Dec. 14, 2016. After living a short time in Grand Rapids, MI they moved to Sturgis with their 3 young children. Jack managed Michiana Heat Treat of Sturgis and later Specialty Heat Treat of Elkhart, IN. He was an active member of the Sturgis Blue Lodge and Sturgis Shrine Club. He held various offices in both organizations.
While a member of the Shrine Club, Jack drove go-cart fire engines in parades and sold onions and candy bars. After retiring, he volunteered many hours to transport children to Shriner's Hospitals in Chicago, IL and Cincinnati, OH.
In retirement, Jack and Cindy traveled to Scotland, Nova Scotia, Mexico, Alaska and visited most states in the U.S. In addition they enjoyed various ocean cruises, visiting with friends in Florida and traveling to numerous U.S. Open golf tournaments. Their favorite destination was a small lakeside cottage in southern Maine.
He is survived by his three children, Judy (Ron) Hout, Curt Robertson and John (Faith) Robertson; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; older sister: Jean Kendall of Winona, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 3:30 – 5:30 P.M.Monday, June 19, 2017, at the Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 807 E. Chicago Rd., Sturgis, MI 49091.
Services celebrating the life of John "Jack" Robertson will be held at 5:30 P.M., Monday, immediately following the visitation, with The Rev. Michael Wicks, First Presbyterian Church, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest that memorial donations be directed to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave. FL17, Chicago, IL 60601 or the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 2211 N. Oak Park, Chicago, IL 60607. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
